MISATO SUZUKI

glimmer

March 25, 2010 – May 13, 2010
Reception for the Artist: Thursday, March 25, 5 – 8 pm

West Hollywood, CA—Sam Lee Gallery in the Blue Building at Pacific Design Center is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled glimmer by Los Angeles-based artist Misato Suzuki. The show opens March 25 and closes May 13, 2010. The gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, May 25, from 5-8 p.m.

With glimmer, Misato Suzuki honed her personal surroundings, experiences and memories and transformed them into 7 striking yet subtle acrylic on canvases. Although each painting’s source initially stems from the private, the ensuing narratives in her work are open-ended. Suzuki’s work, often inspired by a snapshot of or an occurrence from life, explores and questions randomness, perception and reality.

Parade on the Snowy Day (2010), a 48-by-36 inch canvas, depicts a shower of multi-colored confetti descending over a white washed landscape. Here, human presence is felt but not seen, creating a melancholic feeling of a festive event that has either just ended or is about to begin. In glimmer (2010), also a 48-by-36 inch painting, yellow streaks of light rays shoot down into a bellowing cloud of flower-like stars, creating a poetic yet strange tension. The viewer is left to wonder what is made up and what is actual.

Suzuki, born 1975 in Japan, currently works and lives in Los Angeles. In 2002, she received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University, California; in 1999, Suzuki earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington. Suzuki’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Japan, Holland, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Suzuki participated in an artist-in-residence in Tabór, Czech Republic in 2008.
