JEFF GAMBILL

Slap

January 7, 2012 – February 18, 2012

Reception for the Artist: Saturday, January 14, 6 – 8 pm

Los Angeles—Sam Lee Gallery is pleased to present Slap, a solo exhibition of 8 tondo paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Jeff Gambill. The exhibition opens January 7 and closes February 18, 2012; the gallery will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, January 14, from 6 to 8 pm.

With his third solo show at the gallery, Gambill focuses on his childhood memories as points of departure for this series of new paintings.  Why does one remember some things and not others?  How accurate is one’s remembrance of a specific event?  Does that particular occurrence affect or alter one’s existence?  Or does it matter?  Gambill tackles these questions by finding ways to translate these fleeting thoughts to the canvas.  For the artist, finding a shared meaning through the work is an important factor even though he is aware that the readings of such work are never fixed.  What Gambill has offered are vignettes that insight wonders into the subconscious.

Gambill, born in Oakland, California, currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from UCLA in 1980.  His work is in the collections of the Orange County Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, California.
