INGA DOROSZ

Seascapes

July 19 – August 23, 2008
Reception for the Artists: Saturday, July 19, 6 – 9 pm

Los Angeles, CA—Sam Lee Gallery is pleased to present Seascapes, a solo exhibition of recent works by artist Inga Dorosz. The show opens July 19 and closes August 23, 2008; the gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, July 19, 6 to 9 p.m. This is the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.

Seascapes features 7 black-and-white photographs investigating the beauty that hides within the ordinary. In this series of works, Dorosz manipulates tinfoil to create the illusion of vast and ethereal environments. Shot up close, this unlikely medium offers the viewer a contemplative reverie.

Inspired by escapist explorations of the unknown such as those of Ishmael in Moby Dick, Dorosz challenges our notions of familiarity by unearthing landscapes from their quotidian origins. While Dorosz’s earlier landscapes are created from sugar, potatoes and other everyday materials, the scenes in Seascapes are found rather than fabricated.  How many microcosms exist, awaiting discovery? Dorosz’s photographs urge the viewer to look closer.

Dorosz, born in Poland in 1975, received her master’s degree in sculpture from Stanford University in 2001. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the UCLA. Dorosz has participated in numerous exhibitions in the western United States, including shows in Portland, San Francisco and Santa Fe.
