Reception for the Artist: Saturday, October 27, 6 – 8 pm
Los Angeles, CA—
Sam Lee Gallery is pleased to premiere San Francisco-based artist Erica Lee Wheelock’s first solo exhibition entitled “Far Out” from October 27 to December 8. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, October 27, 6 – 8 p.m.
“Far Out”—a playful and metaphorical title—is guided by a singular focus and a highly personal point of view. The show consists of intricate ink drawings on paper and represents the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Wheelock’s drawings make visible the artist’s quest to map out her own new cosmological universe—not to negate society’s viewpoint—but to fuel her inner drive to understand the world.
Wheelock’s drawings are created from a taxonomy of collected images of aerial terrains gleaned from Google Earth. A virtual tsunami of swirling, psychedelic arrangements appear as aerial mappings, but are jarring in their twisted bird’s-eye-view perspective. Tiny recognizable landmarks emerge from unidentifiable landscapes. The drawings are created through a fusion of fantasy and topography.
Erica Lee Wheelock was born in Houston, Texas, in 1980. The artist received her master’s of fine art degree from California College of the Arts (San Francisco) in 2006. Her drawings have been published in New American Paintings #67 (January, Volume II, Issue 6). Her work is currently in the Artist Registry at The Drawing Center in New York (www.drawingcenter.org).
